FACT SHEET

The BRAIN BOOK® System is a complete, home-based cognitive retraining program for persons with brain injury (TBI and ABI) who wish to acquire compensatory skills for the purpose of maximizing cognitive function. The program has been successful for people with mild, moderate and severe injuries. A complete functional assessment battery is available for anyone who may not be sure if the program will be either too simplistic or too complex for them.

The BRAIN BOOK® System is appropriate for people with brain injury who:

are able to read and write (minimum of grade 3 level),
possess self awareness/insight (or are capable of acquiring it)
are highly motivated to function at their maximum vocational potential,
are willing to independently commit the necessary time and energy to complete the program successfully

Program Design
The BRAIN BOOK® Program is designed to teach persons with brain injury to compensate for cognitive deficits resulting from brain injury, most notably short-term memory impairment and difficulties with organization and problem-solving. Program tools consist of audio, video, electronic and paper-based assistive devices, as well as specialized and individualized instruction focusing on overcoming barriers in the following areas:

difficulties becoming and staying oriented
difficulties following instructions
difficulties with initiation and follow-through
difficulties with time management
difficulties with organizing and sequencing tasks (task management)
difficulties with organizing and expressing thoughts (interpersonal communication)
difficulties with management of troubling feelings and socially appropriate behaviors
difficulties making effective, independent decisions
difficulties solving problems independently

Delivery of Services
Instruction is delivered directly to the consumer on the Internet. The distance learning vehicle is the e-mail teaching list, “BRAIN BOOK® Instruction.” Peer support and e-mail discussion on the topics of returning to work and learning skills is available on the e-mail support lists, “TBI-WORKING“ and “TBI-TEACHING.” See the attached list for a complete inventory of program materials and services.
