BRAIN BOOK® System

Man with magnifying glass The BRAIN BOOK® System is a comprehensive life and work management system specially designed for persons with brain injury. This unique educational program teaches persons with brain injury how to use the BRAIN BOOK®, a customized life manager/day planner specially designed to meet the complex needs of persons with brain injury - both at home and at work. The BRAIN BOOK® System can be customized to meet the individualized needs of persons with mild, moderate, and severe brain injury.

Weightlifter The BRAIN BOOK® System focuses on using residual strengths to teach specific skills that compensate for short-term memory impairment, confusion, disorientation, difficulty with organization and time management, loss of emotional control and a host of other problems associated with brain injury.

The BRAIN BOOK® System was invented by Kathy Moeller, who experienced a brain injury when the car she was driving hit a bus in a head-on collision. After five months of residential treatment in a state-of-the-art brain injury treatment facility, nine more months of outpatient treatment and several job failures, the BRAIN BOOK® System was developed in response to the frustration.

Since 1992, the BRAIN BOOK® System's "Tool Kit" has been shared with hundreds of others with brain injury, and it has been formally taught since 1993.

Tool Kit The BRAIN BOOK® System elevates compensatory strategies to the tactical level. Students get usable tools they can immediately apply in their day-to-day life. Kathy believes that teaching strategies only goes so far. Most people with brain injuries need real-world tools, such as a customized day planner, and other specially designed material. Kathy describes the situation of learning skills with the analogy of building a house. To build a house, a person needs special tools and skills. You won’t be able to build a very good house with a hammer, a few nails and some basic instruction in house-building. However, if you have a full set of tools and know how to use them, you will be able to build a solid house.

Until now, the kind of "tool kit" Kathy developed for persons with brain injury simply did not exist. The BRAIN BOOK® System is designed to last a lifetime by fostering skills transfer after basic skills have been learned. Skills training has been elevated to an art, as well. Skills can even even be taught remotely now, through distance learning and webinars on the Internet.

The BRAIN BOOK® is a Life Manager

Lightbulb The heart of the system is the BRAIN BOOK®, a life manager/day planner specially designed for persons with brain injury. It is similar to a commercial day planner, but unlike traditional planners designed for "civilians," the BRAIN BOOK® is tailored to meet the unique needs of persons with memory and organizational impairment. It is one component of an entire system for replicating cognitive function on paper. Other components include self-help cueing audio tapes, video instruction, a storage system and a variety of visual and environmental aids.

Some people call the BRAIN BOOK® a "prosthetic memory device." Many people who use the BRAIN BOOK® System call it their "paper brain." And some very creative folks who use wheelchairs as their primary assistive device, have favorably compared a BRAIN BOOK® to a "cognitive wheelchair."

It doesn't matter what you call it. When a person learns how to use the BRAIN BOOK® System, they are able to function better at home and at work because they have learned to replicate cognitive function on paper -- something many professionals know is the key to increasing function and regaining quality of life after brain injury.

With the introduction of BRAIN BOOK® System's NEW electronic BRAIN BOOK®, replication of cognitive function will be even easier! Imagine simply talking to your "Schedule Page," or making memory notes that talk back to you when you need them.

Imagine getting to work and feeling lost, and simply asking, "How do I get to my workstation?" Imagine being awakened in the morning by a personalized alarm message that says, "Kathy, it's time to wake up. You need to leave the house at 7:30 to be at work by 9:00. You have an hour to get ready. Look at your green "Daily ROUTINES" cue card."
