Skills in Action
Assessment
BRAIN BOOK® System recommends taking a fresh look at how
persons with brain injury are evaluated for job placement, rehabilition
services, life planning, etc. Too often, "low scores" on traditional
assessments translate into recommendations that result in lives being
"scaled back" inappropriately. Many of BRAIN BOOK®'s student's scores on
traditional assessments were so low the professionals in their lives predicted
they would never be able to learn to use "such a complex program."
This was (happily) not the case. On the other hand, "high scores" are
not necessarily good predictors for success either, as much as someone with a
"mild" or "moderate" diagnosis might benefit.
BRAIN BOOK® System
staff, along with their consulting psychologist, can help you determine whether
the BRAIN BOOK® System's
program is likely to benefit one or more of your patients with brain injury. We
have learned that traditional, standardized assessments need to be supplemented
with assessment tools designed to specifically focus on a person's willingness
and ability to learn compensatory skills. BRAIN BOOK® System's "Skills in Action"
Asessment does this.
In some cases, a person may score as low as beneath the 1st percentile and
end up being successful with the BRAIN BOOK® System's program. Others who are diagnosed
with "mild" injury and score in the average or above average range,
as compared the general population, attempt the program and fail. BRAIN
BOOK® System's "Skills
in Action" Assessment can help you determine where your patient is likely
to fit into this broad range.

Fact Sheet and
our "Skills in
Action" Assessment, for further screening and evaluation guidelines.
Feel free to contact Michael O'Connell, Ph.D. (Rogue Valley Psychological
Associations), with questions. Dr. O'Connell has experience counseling
consumers who use the BRAIN BOOK® System and also oversees administration of the

BRAIN-EDU E-mail Discussion List
As a public service, BRAIN BOOK® System offers an e-mail discussion list for
professionals, educators and parents of young persons with brain injury.
Participation is free of charge. Membership to
BRAIN-EDU is open to anyone with a
serious interest in discussing brain injury education and treatment options.
BRAIN-EDU is an open list, meaning archives of past messages are available
to anyone with access to the World Wide Web. Click

the archives.
ASSIST-TBI Support List
ASSIST-TBI is a closed list, meaning that messages are only available to
members of the list. ASSIST-TBI is a support and discussion list that was
originally set up for family members. Over the years, the list has expanded to
include professionals with an interest in helping families. Interested
clinicians are invited to join the ASSIST-TBI Support List.
TBI-TEACHING and TBI-COACHING Lists
BRAIN BOOK System teaches skills on-line, via the TBI-TEACHING e-mail
discussion list. A separate list (TBI-COACHING) is available for skills
trainers or professionals with an interest in how BRAIN BOOK® System skills are taught. By
joining these lists, you will be able to see first-hand how skills are taught
by BRAIN BOOK® System
staff.
To find out more about BRAIN BOOK® System's TBI-TEACHING and TBI-COACHING lists,
